Orange County and Inland Empire Program

Historically known as "Hollywood's Backdrop" due to the diversity of landscapes, the Inland Empire region faces enormous development pressures. This program area focuses on preserving important landscapes in Orange County and the Inland Empire. Orange is one of the densest counties in California, housing an average of 36 residents per square mile. Likewise, the populations of San Bernardino, Riverside, and Imperial Counties already exceed two million residents. Pavement, roadways, and tract housing are replacing farmlands, citrus groves, and deserts.

For several years, TPL has worked with the community, public agencies, and other nonprofits to identify key properties in Orange County and the Inland Empire. These land acquisitions would link existing open space and habitat, as well as provide expanded recreational opportunities for the region's vast population. It is our goal to help buffer, link, and expand these recreational assets for hikers, bicyclists, and equestrians, as well as provide additional habitat to the region's myriad plant and animal species.

Protection of the Santa Ana River watershed, Southern California's largest watershed, is underway with projects in Riverside and Orange County. The Santa Ana River Trail, which is planned to extend from its headwaters in the San Bernardino National Forest, and will traverse nearly 100 miles through three counties (San Bernardino, Riverside, and Orange) ending at the Pacific Ocean. TPL, along with other nonprofits, is working to acquire lands that will enhance the recreational opportunities along the river.

TPL is working to protect large privately owned lands along the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail as it passes through the San Bernardino National Forest, and also to connect lands between Orange, Riverside, and San Diego Counties.
