Known for its spectacular views extending to Mount Moosilauke and Mount Cardigan, the Carter Hill Orchard in Concord, NH, includes 50 rolling acres of mature fruit trees and a thriving produce stand. For years, the 155-acre farm has also been an important destination for more than 2,000 school children that visit annually on educational field trips, as well as for local hikers and cross-country skiers. So when the farm recently went up for sale, a coalition of community groups joined together to protect it permanently. After a year-long fundraising campaign, TPL purchased the farm and protected it with a conservation and public access easement that prohibits development. The farm was then sold to its longtime manager for continued agricultural use. The project received funding from the City of Concord, the State of New Hampshire, the federal Farmland Protection Program, and contributions from more than 250 private donors.
