Parks and health: fighting the obesity epidemic
Extensive research shows that access to parks is essential for sustaining both healthy people and healthy communities. Combating the nation's growing obesity problem, however may require more than greater access alone. Studies consistently show that easy access to equipment and facilities increases frequency and intensity of exercise, and people are more likely to exercise when in groups or social environments.

Fitness Zones: a research-based, affordable solution
Fitness Zones are easy-to-use outdoor gyms focused on improving general health through weight loss, cardiovascular health, increased flexibility and strength building. Installed in existing parks, the equipment is designed to be durable, vandal resistant, and appropriate for teenagers (thirteen and older) and adults of all fitness levels.

Launched in 2007, TPL's Fitness Zones Program reflects TPL's commitment to parks and open space in urban in Los Angeles, and leverages our expertise in designing and developing neighborhood parks in densely populated, park-deficient communities. Eleven Fitness Zones were installed in the first two years of the program, and many more are planned.

TPL's Fitness Zones introduce a new set of healthy activities to the park experience, creating a supportive, accessible, and social environment for getting fit.
