Beyond Lightbulbs & Hybrids - Climate Change Workshop
Local Government Solutions to Global Climate Change
Across the nation, local and state elected officials are leading meaningful efforts to reduce emissions that contribute to global climate change. In the process, we are learning how to save energy, improve buildings, create jobs and enhance the livability of our communities. Florida has emerged as a recognized leader in addressing climate change. More than 70 Florida mayors have signed the U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, at least eight counties have pledged to reduce emissions through ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, or the Cool Counties program, and climate change is at the forefront of Governor Charlie Crist's policy agenda.
In the summer of 2008, The Trust for Public Land, in conjunction with the Florida Association of Counties, Florida League of Cities, and ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, hosted workshops in Miami and Tampa that brought together local leaders, staff, and others interested in climate change and energy issues. Attendees had the opportunity to share best practices, hear up-to-the-minute information about state and federal legislation, and discuss how Florida communities can take their climate change action plans to the next level. Funding was provided by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.
