National Park(ing) day is a national holiday celebrating the role of parks in public life. In many cities the event is held as a protest, to ask for more public parks & less car-centric city design. New Haven's predominance of parks begs a different goal: promotion & education regarding the parks system. We'd like to use this day to tell busy downtown citizens about the wide opportunities open to them all over our very green city, and encourage stewardship & enjoyment of New Haven's parks. We'll be downtown this Friday, September 19th near City Hall along Church Street. For more info contact David at dls@davidstreever.com.

The car would appear to be growing out of the earth, or alternatively, the car is being taken over by the park.

Passersby are encouraged to stop and have a drink of tap water (Hetch-Hetchy's best) dispensed from our ceramic water jug...and folks are invited to help create "flowers" made from plastic water bottles.

House of Water: 1906 Bryant Street.
This park(ing) is a meditation on the human relationship to water in the western United States. The presence of this ephemeral element sustains and supports our living environment. On a metaphorical level water is the foundation of the tons concrete and steel that form our cities and infrastructure. The structure that forms and defines this park(ing) is transparent and insubstantial - drinking cups stacked one upon another. Only the weight of the water that fills the cups gives it the stability to stand. The flower heads that float inside the cups are fragile, beautiful and totally dependent on the water that supports their weight. This park(ing) literally uses water to create a space for people to gather, calling attention to the beauty and strength of this element while highlighting the fragility of our relationship to it. http://lutskoassociates.com/

This year, Syracuseans will explore the potential of open space with four different park(ing) installations throughout Downtown. We will (re)think about how we eat, how we dress, how we relax and how we live. The four installations and their locations are as follows:
- The Dining Room Table by HarPeiPo, a collective team of Syracuse University students. West Jefferson Street & Franklin Street. By reintroducing the dining room table to the public, we hope do draw attention to our underused dining room tables and the distinctly American habit of dining alone
- Introducing Marie Antoinette by the Everson Museum. Walton Street in Armory. Have your picture taken with Marie Antoinette, or dress up as the superstar herself! This installation introduces the Everson's new exhibit in a distinctly public way.
- Green Oasis by the Doubletree Hotel. West Fayette Street & Franklin Street. Take off your shoes and enjoy the grass, flowers and shade of this green sanctuary.
- Sustainable Urban Living by the Alchemical Nursery Project. Water Street in Hanover. Interactive installation that will educate people about the basics of living sustainable and healthy lives.
