In October 2003, The Trust for Public Land created a Greenprint for Beaufort County. The "greenprinting process" brings a community together to identify a mutually agreed upon long-term conservation vision. It prioritizes acquisition opportunities and gives focus to where conservation dollars should be spent.

The greenprint, is in reality, the compilation of community wishes. It began as a base map identifying all the public land and private land that was then protected from development in the county, and then expanded to graphically depict additional areas the residents of the county would like to see protected and permanently preserved. The end product reflects the input from Beaufort County citizens in seven public meetings held in different parts of the county, from the county planning staff, municipalities and the local conservation community. It is a collaborative document.

Through a generous grant from the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, the Beaufort County Greenprint was updated in Fall 2006 through a series of public meetings held throughout the county, and is a living, breathing adaptive instrument that continues to mirror the community's collective conservation vision. It continues to be "What's Hot" in Beaufort County's conservation tool box.
