Once a sleepy town, Long Island's Brookhaven has experienced rapid growth. Ten thousand new homes are expected over the next five years, and at present growth rates, all remaining farmland and open space will be gone in only ten years. Twice in the last five years, local voters concerned have reached for their wallets in an attempt to stem this loss. A $10 million ballot measure, passed in 1999, has been used to help preserve almost 400 acres. Buoyed by that success, voters approved a $20 million measure in November of 2002 to preserve open space and environmentally important land. TPL's Conservation Finance Program helped local officials research and design this recent ballot measure, and also helped conservationists promote it, thereby supporting Brookhaven's efforts to preserve its quality of life and access to nature.
