Migratory birds on the Pacific Flyway will now have another stopover, thanks to TPL's acquisition of the 4,450-acre Liberty Island, in the Sacramento- San Joaquin Delta. Liberty Island will be the centerpiece of a proposed U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service refuge, and its protection is part of the state and federally funded restoration of the delta, where wetlands acreage has decreased 94 percent due to development. Like most of the delta, the island was leveed and the water drained into dredged channels over the last century, severely reducing wildlife habitat. Plans for Liberty Island include efforts to restore half of the island as habitat for endangered fish, and to improve wetland complexity and natural filtration of water. The result will be cleaner water for fish, birds, and the 20 million people who use the delta as a source of drinking water.
