Miami River Greenway

The Miami River is the site of TPL's largest and most comprehensive program in South Florida. In 2002, TPL was invited by the Miami River Commission to take on the assignment of studying the Miami River corridor and making recommendations for area revitalization. The resulting Miami River Greenway Action Plan offers a "greenprint" for healthy urban redevelopment - a strategy to realize the potential of the Miami River as a natural resource and public amenity, while spurring neighborhood improvements that will transform depressed areas into more attractive places to live and work.

The greenway project is a nationally significant urban conservation effort, a multi-year collaboration of nonprofit organizations, government agencies, business interests and neighborhood groups working together to restore the river's ecological and historic heritage while also addressing the social and economic needs of the people who live and work in the area. Implementation of the plan will result in a linear park system following the course of the river from its mouth in downtown Miami to N.W. 40th Ave., near Miami International Airport. Initial development is in the lower river and also calls for neighborhood linkages into the historic African-American Overtown community on the north side of the river and East Little Havana on the south. Eventually, the Greenway will encompass landscaped pathways, street improvements, lighting, seating, signage, historic markers and other amenities throughout the entire river corridor.
