Three TPL Climate Conservation Initiatives
The Trust for Public Land is committed to using its conservation expertise to help solve and mitigate for the world's most pressing environmental problem. TPL is addressing climate change through three conservation initiatives.
- Climate Mitigation: Natural Landscapes Absorb Carbon
Natural landscapes absorb large amounts of C02 that would otherwise contribute to climate change, while their development releases this primary greenhouse gas into the atmosphere. TPL works with agencies and communities to conserve large natural landscapes such as forests, wetlands, and grasslands, locking-up greenhouse gases that would otherwise contribute to climate change. - Adaptation Landscapes: Helping Wildlife and People Cope
As we come to understand the effects of inevitable climate change on humans and other species, it becomes clear that landscapes need to be conserved now to offset its most damaging effects. TPL works to conserve lands that will help human and natural communities adapt to a changing climate. - Climate-Smart Communities: Compact Settlement Means Lower Carbon Emission
Because of their density, cities produce fewer greenhouse gasses per capita than other forms of human settlement. TPL helps communities create parks and open spaces that enrich and promote compact settlement patterns, thus reducing the amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
