ParkScore™

The Trust for Public Land ParkScore™ Project is a ground-breaking effort in cities to analyze how well parks and public spaces meet residents’ needs for outdoor recreation and experience with nature.

TPL is applying its award-winning Geographic Information Systems (GIS) models to newly assembled data on neighborhood parks and resident demography in the 40 largest cities in the United States. These results will be available for the first time via a new website in early 2012.

Why ParkScore™

By showing how many residents are able to reach a park in a ten-minute walk—a distance that makes a park usable to most people—TPL’s mapping technology pinpoints underserved neighborhoods, those neighborhoods short on parks, playgrounds, and natural areas. The ParkScore™ methodology and analysis helps a community identify where it should invest in new parks. Officials can compare park access in their own cities to comparable locations across the country.

To see ParkScore™ in action, we've developed Denver, Colorado as a working example.

Parks for All

After a ParkScore™ analysis, TPL can help put into action a plan to create parks and natural spaces in the places where they are most needed. TPL offers a comprehensive range of services—identifying properties for acquisition, developing funding sources, negotiating to purchase land, and designing and developing parks.

Why TPL

  • TPL is the nation’s leading organization at creating parks, greenways and natural places in urban areas.
  • Full suite of services for creating city parks and green spaces.
  • Deep experience in applying GIS modeling to help communities shape their future.
