Situated across Lake Washington from Seattle, the City of Bellevue has experienced steady growth since the 1980s. Developers are working to keep up with the growing number of residents, but so are local conservationists. In a state that’s known for its stunning landscapes and recreational opportunities, Trust for Public Land is working to preserve the outdoor spaces Washington residents love most.

Mercer Slough, an open wetland in the heart of the city, has long been coveted by both developers and local conservationists. Between 1988 and 1990, TPL worked with community members and city officials to protect 100 acres of Mercer Slough as an addition to the greater park surrounding it.

Now more than 320 acres, Mercer Slough is Lake Washington’s largest remaining wetland. Visitors can explore the park by canoeing or kayaking along its various canals, catching glimpses of great blue herons, bald eagles, beavers, or otters. Hikers also enjoy the more than seven miles of boardwalks and interconnected trails across the property.
