Greening New Orleans

The Trust for Public Land is helping a resurgent City of New Orleans create an innovative model park system. Drawing upon their national expertise in urban park planning, TPL is partnering with the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority to develop a new, multifunctional park space prototype.

TPL uses GIS (Geographical Information Systems) mapping technology to show which areas most need parks and playgrounds, and which areas are most suitable for water retention, trails, sports fields, and community farms and gardens. The result for New Orleans will be plans for an expanded network of neighborhood parks that encourage healthy recreation, connect people and neighborhoods, enhance economic opportunity, provide space for urban gardens, and, when necessary, help to manage storm water in flood-prone areas.
