In Southeast Washington, D.C., the CDC estimates obesity rates to be higher than in the district as a whole. In these neighborhoods, safe and healthy places to exercise are scarce-and many residents cannot afford private gym fees.

To address this shortage, as part of our National Fitness Zone® Program, The Trust for Public Land and the National Park Service, with funding from ICF International, created a new outdoor fitness station at Anacostia Park. Opened in April 2014, the fitness station features 18 fun, easy-to-use pieces of equipment that enable a full cardio workout, as well as flexibility exercises and strength training. The equipment is wheelchair-accessible, and appropriate for teenagers, adults, and the elderly.
