Jose Manuel Collazo Playground is a hub for activity in North Philadelphia despite its fall into disrepair. The neighbors' love for outdoor sports drives people to the handball and basketball courts, but the remainder of the site lacks opportunities for children and families to play or gather together. With overwhelming support from this vivacious community, The Trust for Public Land is helping transform the space into a playground that celebrates their unique Latino culture.

The community-led design for Collazo Playground revives the spirit of the old playground while creating new opportunities for all community members. The new site will feature expanded handball and basketball courts to account for the high volume of players, play equipment, a water spray ground, and a common area for community gatherings and events like outdoor bingo. The playground will also include a rain garden and underground water storage areas to manage stormwater runoff.

Construction of the playground will begin in Spring 2015.
