Melinda Gulick Named Arizona's Cox Conserves Hero

Program donates $15,000 to local environmental nonprofits

Phoenix, AZ - 02/23/2012

The Trust for Public Land (TPL), in partnership wit Cox Communications, today revealed Melinda Gulick as Arizona's first Cox Conserves Hero. As Gulick's nonprofit of choice, the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy will receive $10,000.

Gulick was nominated for her long-standing commitment to and passion for Arizona's open space. By cultivating donors and working through complex financing models for the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, she built important awareness among both corporations and citizens. She also volunteers for the Desert Foothills Land Trust, McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, the City of Scottsdale Preserve Commission and the Desert Discovery Center Task Force.

Each of the finalists received $2,500 to donate to their environmental nonprofits of choice:

The finalists were nominated by the public and then selected by a judging circle, including:

  • Jim Buster, Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, Legislative Director and Avondale City Councilman
  • Amanda Reeve, Chair of Arizona's House Energy, Natural Resources and Environment Committee
  • Dave Richins, Mesa City Councilman
  • Cheryl Lombard, The Nature Conservancy
  • Chris Byrne, The Trust for Public Land's

The Cox Conserves Heroes program was created through a partnership between The Trust for Public Land and Cox Enterprises, to honor everyday conservationists. Since the program launched in late 2007, more than $190,000 has been donated to local environmental nonprofits. Cox Conserves Heroes also runs in Atlanta, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, and Virginia.
