From his office window on Manufacturers Road, Jeff Bartlett can see the four lushly wooded hilltops of Stringer’s Ridge that rise just north of the North Shore cityscape. Bartlett, a marketing and social media coordinator at Rock/Creek Outfitters, is an avid trail runner, and like many other athletes who live or work in the downtown area, the 32-year-old finds solace on the dirt paths that wind along the ridgeline.

The new section of the South Chickamauga Creek Greenway that officially opens Sunday is both a physical and a symbolic link. The 2.6-mile trail is a key piece in Chattanooga's grand plan to link Camp Jordan in East Ridge and the Tennessee Riverpark. Along the way, the winding, wooded trail passes sites of hidden history -- Indian habitation, anti-secessionist rebellion and Civil War clashes.
