The Union Bank Foundation targets its charitable contributions toward strategic areas to achieve the greatest impact on community health. One of these areas is the environment. Through its support of The Trust for Public Land's (TPL) Parks for People-Bay Area program, the Foundation helped provide green space, locally grown food, and environmental education for a low-income neighborhood in the city of San Rafael, California through the Canal Community Garden project. The garden's planter beds will produce food for up to 100 families, while the central outdoor classroom and gathering space will encourage community involvement.

"Our foundation works to support organizations that are addressing the root causes behind many issues facing our communities today. We strive to support the health of all communities where we do business, and The Trust for Public Land's Parks for People initiative is a natural partner. TPL engages residents from local communities, bringing them together to effect change and improve their environment," said Carl Ballton, president and chief operating officer of the Union Bank Foundation. "A new park can revitalize a neighborhood and open avenues for economic opportunity."

In addition to the Canal Community Garden, Union Bank is proud to support TPL's Parks for People programs in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Established in 1953, the Union Bank Foundation supports nonprofit institutions and organizations that help meet the needs of the communities it serves through loans, grants, community outreach, and volunteer hours in four areas of focus: The Environment, Community Development, Affordable Housing, and Education.
