E. Clement (Clem) Shute Jr., San Francisco, CA, is a founding partner of Shute Mihaly & Weinberger, LLP, a law firm, which specializes in environmental and land use law. Prior to founding his firm in 1980, He was an Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Environment and Consumer Protection Section where he was in charge of enforcing California's environmental laws. Mr. Shute has been counsel to the San Francisco Bay Conservation & Development Commission, the California Coastal Commission, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and numerous other public agencies. He has also represented many environmental organizations and citizens groups. In his years of law practice, he has been involved in many landmark environmental cases, including several in the United States Supreme Court.
Clem has served on the Boards of the Save San Francisco Bay Association, the Green Belt Alliance and the Tahoe-Baikal Institute. He received the Lifetime Environmental Achievement Award in 2009 from the Marin Conservation League. He is currently an adjunct professor of law at Boalt Hall School of Law and Hastings College of the Law. He has also taught at and Golden Gate Law school and San Francisco State University. He received his BS from Berkeley and his JD from Boalt Hall.
