Location: New York

Position Summary

We are actively considering candidates from the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Washington, D.C. areas.  The Major Gifts Officer (MGO) is responsible for cultivating and soliciting gifts of $25,000 and above from supporters and prospects.  Working as part of the major gift team and with State Directors of Philanthropy, the MGO’s primary responsibilities include the best practices of moves management and direct solicitation.  Reporting to the Director of Major Gifts, the MGO is responsible for managing relationships with supporters in the Division who can support local, statewide, and national initiatives.

Essential Functions

  • Manages donor portfolio of 120 individual supporters and prospects.
  • Responsible for 12 to 15 donor visits each month.
  • Maintains an active schedule of solicitations, cultivation visits, donor trips,  events, and stewardship activities.
  • Help identify new prospects.
  • Develops annual fund raising plan.
  • Engages The Trust for Public Land’s Board of Directors and volunteers on donor donor cultivation and solicitation. 
  • Engages in fundraising best practices (i.e., moves management, effective utilization of prospect data/database, and effective collaboration with staff, peers and volunteers to achieve goals).
  • Ensures close coordination and integration with other philanthropy staff (Division Philanthropy Directors, MGOs, State Philanthropy Directors, Institutional Giving Directors as appropriate) within the MGO's division
  • Fosters and maintains productive relationships with staff across TPL
  • Trains and mentors other philanthropy staff and volunteers in fundraising practices and techniques.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of major gift experience.
  • Experience with best practices including the efficient use of database systems, including prospect tracking, a willingness to strengthen strategies through prospect review and an openness to share philanthropy techniques while learning The Trust for Public Land's system of best practices
  • Keen fund raising strategist who can engage existing donors, engage new prospects and foster relationships with key program leaders
  • Proven ability to raise significant five- and six-figure gifts individuals, family foundations and major corporations.
  • Demonstrated success developing and sustaining relationships with key supporters and volunteer leadership.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills along with exceptional interpersonal and organizational abilities
  • Exceptional ability to organize and motivate others, including  staff, peers, and volunteers. Including experience training and mentoring other philanthropy staff and volunteers in fundraising practices and techniques.
  • Ability to function effectively as a member of a team, and a willingness to participate in activities and assignments that will benefit other members of the team or will contribute to the accomplishment of team objectives
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, take initiative and make recommendations in resolving problems and provide guidance to other staff.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent required.
  • Willingness to travel.
