Position Summary

The Associate Director of Philanthropy (ADoP) is responsible for the oversight, planning and implementation of a comprehensive philanthropy program within New York that secures significant financial resources from individuals to support The Trust for Public Land's conservation goals.

The primary focus is on identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gift ($25,000) and high mid-level prospects, including annual, pledged and planned gifts.  Responsibilities include prospect identification, prospect tracking, cultivation and solicitation procedures, direct solicitations, closing gifts, proposal writing and development, and major donor gift recognition. 

This position reports to the New York Senior Director of Philanthropy and is responsible for all designated donors, related programmatic or project campaigns and activities.  The position is responsible for motivating and coordinating the efforts of a multi-disciplinary staff, including institutional giving staff, marketing staff, other fundraisers and administration.

The position works with New York Sr. Director of Philanthropy to establish fundraising goals to support an annual state program budget and is accountable for these goals.  In addition, s/he will focus on long-range strategic priorities, advances our philanthropy goals, and communicates a broad vision to others.

Essential Functions

  • 65% Identifies potential individual donors, develops cultivation and solicitation plans, implements and maintains donor tracking system, makes direct solicitations, closes gifts, writes and develops proposals and case statements, and coordinates and implements major donor recognition.  This position works with the New York State Director/Program Staff on overall fundraising goals, objectives and strategy. Works closely with these leaders to aid understanding of states' fundraising goals, progress and implications for current and future fiscal year funding of conservation programs.
  • 15% Works with Institutional Giving Staff to develop and cultivate institutional donors.
  • 10% Interfaces with other TPL staff to build awareness of the philanthropy program within the organization. Involved in the coordination and implementation of a multi-year TPL-wide Power of Place Campaign. Develops and maintains relationships with Relationship Managers in the field necessary to securing gifts from their donors and prospects. Works closely with the State Director of Philanthropy and other Project/Program staff to determine effective strategies for identified donors and prospects. Keeps appropriate staff apprised of key interactions, issues or concerns
  • 5% Working with the Director of Planned Giving: identifies potential planned gift donors, develops cultivation and solicitation procedures, implements and maintains planned gift tracking system, makes direct solicitations, writes and develops proposals and coordinates and implements planned giving recognition.
  • 5% Other duties as assigned


  • 3-5 years of development experience
  • Individual donor experience required, including strategizing large gift solicitations, tracking multiple prospects and donors, and closing gifts of $25,000 or more.
  • General philanthropy principles knowledge, including experience using philanthropic data bases, prospect tracking, and working knowledge or ability to learn basics of charitable gift planning.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills and outstanding verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Experience in a land conservation organization and with the local philanthropic market a plus
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and a willingness to travel about 15% of the time.
